What the Paper Says: A Theoretical Critical Review
Summary
The paper implies that; there is a lot of stress to issue in journal league tables, lack of demand of information systems (IS) among learners. IS experts are not recognized beyond their communities, and inappropriate study information in IS publications among other issues of concern in the IS field. Individuals who study IS do so in diverse standpoints thus the reason why there is no official description of the term. Due to this, researches result in generating incorrect data and therefore produce more confusion of IS.
The author of this article (Paul, 2007) differentiates IS from Information Technology (IT) by asserting that the latter is the transfer means of the former. This opinion is similar to that of author Hongyan Ma (2007) who proclaim that the IS system uses IT. Richard Baskerville, Jan Stage Jan and Janice I. DeGross (2000) uphold that IT is the impetus of the fast-shifting IS sector.
Quality of the Research
The research question is simple and clear as it leads directly to the subject of debate. The topic is quite interesting since it dwells on IS in the contemporary society. The paper lacks of understanding regarding the world of IS and what it entails. There was no primary data to back the author’s thoughts, and the sample scope is not evocative enough. There is also no literature review from related researches, and this might decrease the reliability and validity of the study.
Research Methodology
The method used was interpretative since there is no data from research conclusions (Hopf, 2008). The author relied on his personal experience through articles and conferences. It should have incorporated a quantitative method to support inferences.
Findings and Discussion
There is a precise classification of the challenges and the explanation of the topic. Nevertheless, the definition and discussion of the problems fail to expound the prospects of the IS sector adequately.
Additional Notes
The paper recognizes that additional study is needed to place the argument into a standpoint. A reliable description of IS and its cognizance must be reached by imminent research which can appeal to more scholars.
